Music: New Summer Yoga Playlist!

A rainbow illustration of music images including a record player and cassette tapes.

Namaste! I am happy to report that I finally created a new yoga playlist, more specifically, a new summer yoga playlist! It's been a little while since I took the time to put together some melodies for class. Those of you who are my regular students know that I have a great passion for this. When I teach yoga, I love using music and sound to evoke the right feeling, known in Sanskrit as bhavana. Though practicing yoga the original way, in silence, is beautiful and at times, needed, sometimes we just crave some sound to keep us company. Since it's the peak of summer and the heat is wearing people down, I thought some cooling tunes were the way to go.

The playlist I put together is called "Chill Summer" and the songs included evoke just that. With a medley of Native American flute music, hand pan melodies, lo-fi yoga flows, and even soothing water sounds, it is sure to be a great accompaniment to a relaxing 1-hour yoga practice. In fact, it's a soothing complement to any relaxing summer activity, not just yoga. So, please enjoy!

If you are interested in doing your own practice as you listen to Chill Summer, I recommend a slower flow with lots of inversions and forward folds. Make sure your Savasana is nice and adequate too (for a 30-minute practice, rest for at least 5 minutes; for a 1-hour (or more) practice, at least 10 minutes is ideal). If you're really trying to escape the heat, I recommend completing your practice early in the morning rising with the sun or in the evening as the sun is setting, but any time of day is great as long as you're moving. Though we always begin with meditation in class, please note that it's actually ideal to meditate after completing asana. So, if you're just doing your own thing, I definitely recommend doing it that way. Recommended poses: Downward Facing Dog, Handstand, Crow, Shoulderstand, Child's Pose, Seated Forward Bend, Standing Forward Bend.

Inversions like Adho Mukha Svanasana, Downward Facing Dog, help to activate the parasympathetic nervous system which is responsible for the rest and digest response.

For those who have Spotify and want to follow me, click here. All of my yoga playlists, and even some other fun non yoga ones, can be found there. Extra note that unless you have the Premium account, you will likely hear ads in between songs.

"Chill Summer" debuted during my class in La Cañada Flintridge this past Saturday morning. To sign up for in-person or online (via Zoom) class, click here. Help our little yoga community grow!

Share some of your favorite yoga tracks with me below! Maybe you'll hear it in the middle of class one day :).
